GTA 6 Report Describes a Familiar Weapon Wheel and a Smaller Carried Arsenal

Jason Schreier's account explains Rockstar's experiments with weapon selection and vehicle storage, with loadout limits changing the preparation behind a familiar interface.

GTA 6’s reported weapon system would make the trip back to a car part of preparing for trouble. A smaller carried loadout and vehicle storage could change what players bring to an encounter, while Rockstar keeps the familiar circular weapon selector.

In his October 19 video about visiting Rockstar North, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier describes the team’s efforts to make carrying weapons more grounded. TechRadar’s October 20 coverage records his account of developers trying alternative layouts, including trays and webs, before keeping the wheel.

Schreier describes a problem with presenting that restriction: empty spaces in a wheel associated with a larger arsenal could draw attention to equipment players could no longer carry. The alternatives were part of an extended design process, although his account does not attach a precise development duration to the menu.

Choosing weapons and choosing a loadout

A weapon wheel answers a straightforward question: how do you select equipment quickly while something dangerous is happening? A carrying limit answers another: what equipment should be available when that encounter begins?

Keeping the first does not undo the second. A familiar selection method can make a changed rule easier to learn. You can recognize how to switch weapons while still having to think harder about what you brought.

Schreier compares the intended approach with Red Dead Redemption 2, where additional equipment is associated with the player’s horse. His GTA 6 account describes vehicle storage taking a similar role. That makes a car potentially important to preparation as well as escape.

Where vehicle storage changes the decision

Design element What changes for the player
Familiar circular selector The act of choosing equipment remains recognizable.
Restricted carried loadout The available choices depend on what was brought.
Vehicle storage in Schreier’s account Returning to the car becomes part of preparation.

The car could therefore carry two values during an encounter: a way to escape and access to stored equipment. Abandoning it might secure a quicker getaway while leaving fewer options afterward. The effect will depend on how close storage is and when the game allows access.

There is a similar balance during an improvised police chase. Losing access to the perfect weapon could make an escape more desperate and distinctive. But the player still needs to understand what is available without fighting the interface while traffic and gunfire demand attention.

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Schreier’s account provides development context ahead of that release; the missions will show how frequently players need to plan around the carrying limit.

Distance would matter as much as the storage menu. Returning to a nearby car could be a quick adjustment; reaching it during a pursuit could be a substantial interruption. Schreier’s account describes the direction of the system without spelling out every access rule or mission condition.

The wheel itself has a different job: let the player recognize and select the available option quickly. Keeping familiar controls could reduce the effort of learning the interface while the inventory rules change around it. A useful evaluation will therefore ask two questions separately: whether choosing an item remains clear, and whether the limits create worthwhile decisions during play.
