Jeff Kaplan Describes His Break From Overwatch as New Game Nears Alpha Test
Kaplan says he avoids following his former project. Kintsugiyama's next Legend of California alpha is scheduled for November 12–18 with more invitations planned.
Jeff Kaplan says he avoids Overwatch searches, videos and community discussion, including material that connects his own name with the game. The former director is now working toward another public test of The Legend of California at Kintsugiyama.
Disconnecting from his former team
In a GameSpot interview covered by PC Gamer on October 14, Kaplan described avoiding the subreddit, videos, and searches about the game or his name in connection with it. He also described telling recommendation systems that he did not want that material.
He linked the approach to leaving the World of Warcraft team in 2008, an experience that helped him handle leaving Overwatch and Blizzard in April 2021. The original interview is GameSpot’s; the account here follows PC Gamer’s coverage.
The recommendation-feed detail gives his departure an everyday dimension. Leaving a workplace did not automatically stop the old project appearing on his screen. He described taking active steps to stop that material following him into his time away from it.
What The Legend of California is building
Kintsugiyama’s official game description presents The Legend of California as a multiplayer action-survival FPS on a mythical island during the gold-rush era. Its activities include exploring, gathering, crafting, building, hunting, and fighting, either alone or with friends. The studio also describes distinct biomes and PvE encounters.
That makes the next question more interesting than whether Kaplan approves of an Overwatch patch. A survival game asks players to build an ongoing relationship with a place and its resources. The team has to make preparation and exploration rewarding alongside shooting, rather than expecting a familiar developer’s name to carry those quieter stretches.
Alpha 5’s dates and access plan
| Alpha 5 Detail | Announced Plan |
|---|---|
| Playtest window | November 12, 10 a.m. PT to November 18, 10 a.m. PT. |
| Previous alpha participants | Automatic access when servers open. |
| New signups | More invitations planned; signup does not guarantee access. |
The studio’s October 17 announcement schedules Alpha 5 from November 12 at 10 AM PT to November 18 at 10 AM PT. Previous alpha participants are due to receive access automatically, with more invitations planned from the Steam signup list. Signing up is not a guarantee of an invitation.
From match play to survival preparation
Overwatch organizes much of its action around the immediate demands of a match. Kintsugiyama’s announced survival activities introduce another rhythm: gather resources, prepare, build, and decide when to take a risk. The shooting has to work within that longer sequence of choices.
The November window is an alpha playtest, so participants will encounter a work in progress. Balance, stability and pacing feedback can help the team evaluate how preparation, exploration and combat fit together. For Kaplan’s existing audience, it is a concrete opportunity to follow his current work.
