PS6 Component Cost Rumors Revive Debate About Next-Generation Pricing

KeplerL2's reported memory and storage estimate differs from an older total bill. Sony's PS5 and PS5 Pro launch prices provide historical comparisons.

More than $680 for memory and storage alone is the latest figure driving speculation about PlayStation 6’s price. The claim comes from hardware leaker KeplerL2, while an older $960 estimate described a total component bill.

TechRadar’s October 19 report connects a July 2026 total-component estimate with a later memory-and-storage claim from hardware leaker KeplerL2. In the forum discussion, the latter claim concerns RAM and NAND alone.

Console / Rumor Price or Cost Estimate What It Includes
July 2026 PS6 component rumor $960 Reported estimate of the total component bill.
Later KeplerL2 memory and storage claim More than $680 RAM and NAND only, under a later set of assumptions.

Neither figure is an announced PS6 retail price. Adding them would count a component subset on top of a complete bill. Subtracting the later figure from the older total would also mix estimates from different dates and assumptions.

Why the two cost estimates cannot be combined

The same applies to the path from a component bill to a shop price. A console has to be assembled, distributed, supported, and sold in different markets. A manufacturer’s commercial strategy also affects the result. The leaked bill alone cannot supply those missing decisions.

PS5’s original launch prices

Sony’s September 2020 PS5 announcement listed US launch prices of $399.99 for the Digital Edition and $499.99 for the disc model. Those are historical launch prices, not quotes for buying either console today.

Against those figures, a $1,000 machine would be roughly two and a half times the original Digital Edition price, or twice the disc model’s. That comparison explains the strength of the reaction, but it is neither an inflation-adjusted comparison nor evidence that Sony has chosen $1,000.

PS5 Pro offers another comparison

Sony’s September 2024 PS5 Pro announcement listed a US launch MSRP of $699.99 for the disc-less console. Taken with the original PS5 announcement, the historical comparison looks like this:

Product Announced US launch price
PS5 Digital Edition, 2020 $399.99.
PS5 disc model, 2020 $499.99.
PS5 Pro, 2024 $699.99, disc drive separate.

A $1,000 console would be about 43% above the Pro’s original $699.99 launch price. The apparent increase therefore changes substantially depending on which PS5 model supplies the comparison. Sony has not announced a PS6 price in the material cited here.

The included hardware changes the comparison

A console’s headline price is only comparable with another when the included hardware is clear. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement, for example, separates the console from an optional disc drive. A person who wants physical games would need to keep that requirement visible when comparing launch packages.

The complete package determines what a new generation enables for players. A game running at a higher resolution is one improvement; a steadier frame rate in demanding scenes is another. A larger storage allocation can reduce the need to manage installations without changing either result. The component estimate does not tell us which trade-offs Sony will prioritize.
