Donald Glover Joins Netflix’s PUBG Series as Star, Writer and Director

KRAFTON has announced a PUBG live-action series in development at Netflix. Its earlier RONDO film provides a useful comparison for the move into television.

PUBG is moving toward a television adaptation with Donald Glover taking on several of its central creative jobs. The project gives KRAFTON a route beyond short promotional films, although viewers still have no release date or story premise.

In its October 30 announcement, KRAFTON said a live-action series is in development at Netflix. Glover will star, write, direct and executive produce. Stephen Glover is attached as a writer and executive producer.

What the announcement establishes

The release also names Michael Schaefer for NEON TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for LV3H as executive producers. KRAFTON identifies LV3H as its entertainment entity, involved in development and production.

The announcement does not identify Glover’s character, an episode count, a filming schedule or a release window. “In development” is the project’s stated stage, so the cast and creative appointments should not be read as a promise of an imminent premiere.

PUBG has already tried live action

The closest announced comparison within the franchise is the RONDO film released in December 2023. Directed by Sam Hargrave and starring Lee Jung-jae, the eight-minute production accompanied the launch of the map.

Series Detail Announced Information
Who is leading it? Donald Glover, with Stephen Glover among the writers and executive producers.
How far along is it? Described as in development.
Who does Glover play? No named character in the announcement.
When can viewers watch? No release date or episode count in the announcement.

The move to a series creates a different writing problem. A short can establish danger through an encounter and finish when the action ends. Television needs characters whose decisions carry consequences into later scenes and episodes.

The game’s strongest dramatic tool is its changing geography

PUBG’s Blue Zone developer letter explains how restricting the play area encourages encounters and reduces the number of survivors. That rule gives an adaptation a built-in clock: a safe position eventually stops being safe.

As an adaptation choice, that pressure could reveal trust through action. Sharing supplies, choosing a route or returning for a teammate can communicate a relationship without stopping the scene for an explanation. KRAFTON has yet to describe the characters or scenes that will put the game’s rules into a television story.

The unresolved question is how much of the series takes place around a competition and how much follows the people outside it. A premise or production update would give fans something more concrete to judge than the franchise name and creative team.

Squad play adds another distinctive resource for the writers. Teammates rarely have identical information or equipment, and their choices can expose whether they trust one another. That gives the series potential material beyond the final survivor. How Glover’s project uses that material remains open until Netflix or KRAFTON describes the characters and premise.
