Restored 1977 Star Wars Returns in February 2027 With Selected IMAX 70mm Shows
Lucasfilm's anniversary plans put the restored original on February 19 and Starfighter on May 28, with selected film-format screenings requiring individual venue confirmation.
February 19, 2027, is the date for Star Wars’ restored original film to return to cinemas, including selected IMAX 70mm locations. A separate May release brings Star Wars: Starfighter, giving the anniversary year two different theatrical occasions.
Lucasfilm’s earlier anniversary announcement established the restored original’s theatrical return. The later IMAX announcement adds format detail to that plan, rather than announcing a different film.
Lucasfilm’s September 8 announcement dates the restored original film for February 19, 2027 and Star Wars: Starfighter for May 28. Selected IMAX 70mm presentations are distinct from an ordinary IMAX listing.
The restoration is part of the attraction
Lucasfilm describes the anniversary presentation as a newly restored version of the original movie, later renamed A New Hope. That makes the edition an essential part of the booking decision, alongside the screen.
For a film with such a long home-viewing history, seeing it with an audience changes the rhythm. A familiar reveal has room to play out at the pace of the scene rather than the pace of someone browsing clips. Quiet moments can feel different when everyone is watching the same image.
That communal experience is the strongest argument for the return. The anniversary supplies a reason to gather people who first saw Star Wars in different decades and put them in the same room.
The two films and their presentation plans
| Film | Announced date | Presentation detail |
|---|---|---|
| Star Wars, the original 1977 film | February 19, 2027. | New restoration; selected IMAX 70mm film locations and a limited theatrical run. |
| Star Wars: Starfighter | May 28, 2027. | A new standalone film, with selected IMAX 70mm film presentations. |
For the original, the edition is part of the attraction. Lucasfilm identifies the restored 1977 movie, but a local screening listing still needs to identify the version and format being sold. Choosing an explicit film-format screening is a different decision from choosing whichever large screen has the most convenient showtime.
Revisiting a classic and discovering a new story
The February event invites audiences back to a known story. Starfighter has the different task of giving viewers a new one. Treating them as distinct occasions makes both more interesting than a single yearlong nostalgia campaign.
For the original, the question is what the restored presentation helps an audience notice again: composition, scene timing, the geography of a chase, or the relationship between an ordinary character and an enormous setting.
For the new film, discovery will matter more. Pairing the releases could make a rewarding double return to the cinema over the anniversary year, but individual locations and ticket dates still come from exhibitors. Lucasfilm’s announcement is the starting point for those plans.
Longtime fans can return to a familiar story in a shared room, while newcomers have a theatrical route into the film that began the series. Individual exhibitors still need to confirm their dates, edition and projection format before viewers choose a screening.
